Junior News – January 2009

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailOur Junior and Youth Sailing has been going from strength to strength. NYC sailors had fantastic results in the Junior September Series. Well done to all our sailors. The Junior sailing programme then took a break until half term when the Leinster Squad and the new NYC Topper Squad started their winter Training programme. We invited Dave Cockerill, the RYA National Topper Coach, over to coach our NYC Toppers. With a dreadful forecast, we did not know if we would get any sailing in but our intrepid Topper sailors with a couple of Optimist sailors who had been invited to try out a Topper for the weekend, got out for two days of fantastic sailing which they all thoroughly enjoyed. We plan to have Dave over again to coach our Toppers as well as an RYA Optimist Coach whom Dave has recommended. We are now half way through our winter training programme with a great team of parents helping with the organising of the training and planning for Spring Training and then for our summer courses. Spring Training for NYC Juniors will start after the February mid term break – Sundays, March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5. Laser Leinster Squad – keep a look out on the ISA website for training dates in the spring. Events away For our Optimist sailors, we strongly recommend the class training week in Schull during the February mid term break – details will be on The Laser Munsters Championships are in Baltimore as usual over the Easter Weekend (April 11-12) with the ISA Youth Nationals taking place the following week April 14-17,venue should be up on ISA website shortly.  2009 Junior Summer Training course dates are as follows:

Optimists competing for the Gorman Trophy The International Sailing Federation (ISAF – where I’ve just had the honour of being elected onto their Youth and Development Committee!) have announced that Ireland and Dun Laoghaire will be hosting the ISAF Youth World Championships in 2012. This event will be jointly from the Royal St. George Yacht Club and National Yacht Club. We have four years to prepare our sailors for this event – presently the ISAF Youth Classes are the Laser Radial, the 420 and the RX:S windsurfer for both boys and girls, and the Sirena SL16 cat and 29er skiff for any combination of boy/girl. In the new year, we’ll be launching a programme to ensure a full compliment of Irish sailors in the event with some podium finishes! Cathy MacAleavey NYC Junior Organiser
