Update on the Topper class at the NYC

Since then Emma Cooney, Louise O Callaghan and Sian Kneafsey went to the Ulsters in Strangford Lough and the following weekend Emma and Sian headed off to the British Inlands at Grantham Water near Cambridge. Emma and Sian heard at the beginning of May that they had been selected for the ISA National Topper Squad. This is a great achievement for the club and much thanks is due to Ben Lynch for his excellent training over the winter and to Cathy Mc Aleavy for getting the Toppers started in the club. Hopefully the group will now grow even more and there will be lots more NYC squad members in the future. Unfortunately Louise was not eligible for selection as she was over age. This means that Topper sailors need to get involved early as the squad cut off is 15- so get sailing! However this age restriction only applies to the ISA squad- all national and international events are open to those up to 18 years of age. If there are any new Topper sailors in the club please let the office know so that you can be added to our contact list. If you have any queries just send me an email at 5cooneys @eircom.net and I will try my best to help. The topper class at NYC has grown a lot over the past year with now more than 15 boats actively involved (club and owned ). This means we now have enough sailors to build a vibrant individual identity for this group which is good for improving sailing standards and creating a social scene for the early to mid teens. The Topper is an ideal transition boat for those who are too tall for an Opi but not yet ready for the strength demanded by a Laser. Some of you have been involved in our Winter training which was very successful- 8 toppers took part and were coached by Ben Lynch (an ex international topper sailor) and Annelise Murphy (international laser sailor). We were blessed with perfect sailing weather and although cold once the kids had enough layers on they did not seem to notice! Everyone got lots of attention due to the great pupil /coach ratio. This Spring we are hoping that even more of you will get involved as we continue to offer great training. This is open to anyone who is level 2 or above. It is a great way to build up your sailing skills before the season starts! We will have the same coaches involved which gives good continuity in training. We are starting with 2 days training over mid-term on the 14th and 15th of Feb and then continue our Spring Sundays from the 1st of March to the 5th of April from 12pm to 4.30 pm. Application forms for these will be posted on the club web site. Please contact myself or Cathy by emailing the club if you have any queries about this or any other aspect of topper training. These are great boats as they are easy to rig, indestructible and a great training boat for the Laser as they are so similar. For this reason many clubs in the UK are now favouring the Topper for their younger sailors as they seem to do better when they transfer to the Laser class. We also hope that a group of Toppers will travel to events this summer- some went to the Topper Worlds in Kerry last year. This makes for great friendships between the group which makes for more fun all round! We plan that some of our sailors will go to the ISA regatta in Schull in April and to the UK nationals in Wales in August. There are also national events throughout the season- these dates are not confirmed yet but will be posted on the topper website over the next few weeks. This is www.irltopper.com and is worth checking on periodically for open training dates held at other clubs. As always there will be summer training camps held in the club starting in June- these dates are available on the club website. Looking forward to meeting you all at one of our up and coming training sessions! Helen Cooney Cathy Mc Aleavy Topper Co-ordinator Youth Organiser
