Kirwans retain NYC Family Challenge Trophy

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailWe had a most beautiful day for our annual National Yacht Club family challenge race day in the Sailfleet J80s. 8 family teams took on the challenge this year and we had tight racing in what can only be described as champagne conditions. The Kirwans were back to defend their title which they had dominated in 2009. They were put under a little more pressure this year but still reigned supreme to once again put their names on the trophy. Racing was windward leeward format with 3 races back to back on a short course in Scotsmans Bay. The decision to allow the use of spinnakers was left to the discretion of the race officer – Adam Winkelmann. Race 1 was a no spinnaker race in about 5 – 7 knots of wind from a North Westerly direction. The Byrne family were quick out of the blocks and tussled closely with the Kirwans for much of the race. The Kirwans, Byrnes and Shanahans arrived simultaneously at the last leeward mark with the Hall family in close pursuit. The Kirwans managed the best mark rounding and bagged the race closely pursued by the Byrnes and Halls and the the youth team representing the Raymonds. Race 2 started in the same North Westerly but finished with a brisk South Easterly sea breeze giving both competitors and race management a challenging time. It was the Shanahans boat that handled the change best and won the race followed by the Kirwans. It might have been something to do with the 7 Shanahans on board being hounded by Liam to hike hard up the last beat (having earlier claimed his family was too large for the light airs) and then a run to finish. Spinnakers were permitted in this race and were used by most to good effect. The Halls decided prematurly to eject some ballast in the form of Simon who went for a brief dip on the last downwind leg. He was recovered and seemed a little more clear headed than he had earlier in the day following the refreshing dose of Irish Sea. With the new sea breeze in force the last race was sailed in a wonderful 10 knot South Easterly with all to play for. The Kirwans led from the start but were pressurised again by the Shanahans and the Raymond Youth team with the Hall family finaly getting the show on the road now that the Saturday night cobwebs were starting to be blown away. This was how it finished confiming the Kirwans as the 2010 champion family with the Shanahans in second place overall on a count back from the Byrnes. The de rig was followed by a few drinks on the Club Platform and prizegiving in glorious sunshine to the sound of the band laid on by Padraig and the burger bar in full flow. All in all a great days entertainment and a challenge laid down for 2011 for all families to practice (or drink less the night before) to better the Kirwan dynasty. Many thanks to Ronan Beirne for his mark laying and on the water efforts, and the the club staff for creating a friendly atmosphere for the club family day. Also to Olivier and the boat house team for getting the J80 fleet in situ and assisting with the berthing arragements. It must be recognised as well how well turned out the J80 fleet were and how well the fleet is maintained by the ISA and the bosun. The familes who participated were; The Byrnes, Cooneys, Halls, Kirwans, Lamberts, O’Callaghan – Redmonds, Raymonds et al and the Shanahans. Many thanks to all who entered and participated in the right spirit of friendly competition on the water.
