Sunday the 11th of July 2010 saw the National Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire host a fantastic Women on Water (WOW) open day in conjunction with the ISA.

Over 60 women ranging from complete beginners to experienced sailors and from as far afield as Galway attended the event which was followed by a beautiful Butlers Pantry “Ladies Victorian Tea Party”.

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Mary Hanafin T.D. and An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Lettie McCarthy (DLRCoco) were both in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the day learning the ropes from Cathy MacAleavey who had organised the event.

Following registration and a briefing of the racing ahead, no time was wasted in getting the ladies out on the water. 40 of the participating women boarded their assigned ISA SailFleet J’80 and headed out into the bay for the first race. The remaining participants sailed in luxury, watching the race onboard “Explorer”, GoSailing.ie’s stunning 54ft yacht.

Once the first race was completed the women onboard “Explorer” were ferried by ribs onto the J’80’s and having earned their racing stripes, some of the ladies who had been sailing in the first race took place on “Explorer”.

The atmosphere in the club after the racing was one of great camaraderie. The women new to the sport talked excitedly about their experience and the more experienced sailors offered them encouragement and advice on how to keep up the sport. The evening ended with a plaque being presented to each of the helms and to both the Minister and An Cathaoirleach as a reminder of their day.
