A fantastic end to the season at the National Yacht Club when 66 main fleet and 15 regatta fleet Optimist sailors descended on the National YC for the Optimist End of Seasons for the Gorman Trophy on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd Sept 2010.

Day 1 – 2nd October

Day one of the event had lots of surprises in store. With a low fast approaching the weather was set to deteriorate so the race officers announcement that the days racing was to be run in the harbour was met with disappointment by the more experienced sailors in the fleet and relief by the regatta fleeters venturing into the main fleet for the first time.

The shifty and gusty offshore southerly wind saw the start line close to the end of Dun Laoghaire’s West Pier and the weather mark off the end of the Carlisle pier, gave a challenging beat to the sailors. The competitive fleet needed a number of general recalls and a black flag start before proceedings finally got under way. This race was led by Aoife Hopkins but she was pipped at the end by Sean Waddilove who won took Race 1 in great style.

Race 2 had to be delayed waiting for the delayed Stena Sea Lynx ferry to leave port. A number of starts sequences that had begun because it was thought the ferry would leave shortly, had to be abandoned leading to frustration for both race committee and fleet. Eventually after a massive wind shift the decision was made to leave the confines of the harbour and run races 2 and 3 outside.

Race 2: In race two Sean Donnelly woke up! and proceeded to win the race followed closely once again by Sean Waddilove.

Race 3: Sean Donnelly did it again this time with Fergus Flood in hot pursuit.

After day one with a lot of the fleet leaders carrying one bad race, the discard will kick in causing a reshuffle. Will Sean Waddilove manage to retain his position at the top of the score board or will Sean Donnelly currently carrying a 13th position make his way to the top of the results? Is Fergus likely to give these two a run for their money ? Either way there’s a good chance this event will be won by someone named Sean…..Bets anyone?

The top five in the main fleet after day one are as follows:

Day 2 – Sunday 3rd Oct

Day two brought sunshine and light winds perfect racing conditions that were a welcome relief from the erratic weather conditions of the previous day. Three races were dispatched in quick succession by PRO Con Murphy in Dublin Bay.

Sean Donnelly won races 1 and 3 and finally let Adam have a bite at the cherry by winnning the last and final race of the series.

and the winner is…….. Sean of course……but which one ? Sean Donnelly was this years winner of the End of Season Regatta winning 4 out of the 6 races. He was followed in 2nd position by Sean Waddilove.
