La Solitaire du Figaro and “Festival des Bateaux”

Plans to host the only foreign stopover of “the unofficial offshore solo championship of the world”  are well advanced…

Between 11th and 14th August 2011, Dun Laoghaire will be the only international stop on the world famous French Solitaire du Figaro yacht race.

To celebrate the stopover of this iconic 3,390 km race, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company and the National Yacht Club have joined forces to create Festival des Bateaux.

The harbour will be a magnificent tapestry of colour as the boats arrive for this international event. Dun Laoghaire will be resplendent with fireworks, music and the sights, sounds, foods, and ‘joie de vivre’ of France. Dun Laoghaire has a rich maritime and festival history and will play host to Festival des Bateaux for three days. The boats will be in port from the 12th to the 14th of August. The festival features a wide variety of French themed events and attractions. Highlights will include fireworks on Friday 12th August at 2200, a festival village with public access to visiting boats, a colourful and authentic French market and exhibition, a festival stage at Harbour Plaza, festival theme and activities throughout Dun Laoghaire and a spectacular farewell as boats depart on Sunday 14th August (boats will be casting off early morning for an 1100 start). Meanwhile, plans to berth the 45 or so competitors expected are well underway.  The “vision” for the stop over that we had back in December is falling in place: The funding has been secured between DLRCoCo and Failte Ireland; Three tenders have been issued. The tender for the supply and delivery of 18 x 11.5m pontoons and associated service bollards has been won by McNiven Marine, Irish agents for Ronautica Marine. The gangway contract was secured by Tynes Gangway, and the last contract for the installation and de-commissioning of the infrastructure is currently underway. In the meantime, for a taste of the action, have a look at great teaser video: —-
