Sean Donnelly wins Optimist Nationals 2011!

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailThe Optimist Nationals were held last week in Howth in almost ideal conditions with a good mix of windy and calm days.  Just over 200 children entered from seven different countries as far away as India and South Africa for this highly competitive event. An indication of the NYC’s growing strength and depth in junior sailing is the 23 entries who crossed the bay to take part.  For many it was their first time sailing in a national event.  We are very proud of all our winners and those who achieved personal bests. In a tight competition Sean was under pressure entering the last day but kept a cool head and sailed comfortably to a well deserved victory.  Not only did Sean win  the event but Ross Quirke finished a successful season by winning the senior silver fleet for the second time this year. In the junior fleet, Loghlan Rickard followed up his second place in the NYC junior regatta with a 3rd place in the junior silver fleet, 16th Irish.  Evie Byrne sailed well all week and was deservedly placed 9th Irish in the junior fleet. We had 3 top ten finishers in the regatta fleet, Clare Gorman, Luke Rickard and Katie Jane Marshall and can be very optimistic for future years. Congratulations to all the sailors and their support teams of parents and coaches!
