Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailconor Ten  National Yacht Club Juniors travelled to Kinsale for the Munster Optimist Championships sailed on the weekend 21st and 22nd September. Cliona Coyle and Nicola Ferguson sailed in the Senior fleet ( 13 to 15 year olds) while Clare Gorman, Ella Hemeryck, Conor Gorman, Charlie Cullen, Luke Rickard, Leah Rickard, Natasha Hemeryck and Hugh O’Connor raced in the Junior fleet ( 12 years old and under). This was Conor and Hugh’s first event in Main fleet having moved up from Regatta Fleet after the Leinsters two weeks previous. Both days were long and tough as the kids were on the water for six hours each day. Six races were  sailed in a light 5-10 knot breeze with strong tides and fog at times. Our best results came in the Junior fleet which attracted 48 entries. Current National Champion Clare Gorman was third overall,  a result which guarantees her position at the top of the Irish National rankings for 2013. Next was Ella Hemeryck in sixth overall followed by Conor Gorman in 14TH Overall.  Conor also won the trophy for first overall in the Junior Silver Fleet. There were some great individual races sailed with both Charlie and Luke scoring top ten results  with  Leah and Natasha scoring top fifteen results. Hugh O’Connor sailed a very consistent Regatta and the experience gained will stand to him for future events. With Conor and Hugh having moved up to Main Fleet, it was noticeable that for the first time this year the NYC had no representation in the Regatta Fleet. I would encourage Parents to bring their kids to these events which are great fun and a fabulous learning experience. The parents have great fun too! Results for the event can be found on
