Baltimore Training Week 2016

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailThe Iodai Baltimore training week took place during the mid term week with 14 families from the NYC attending. Out of over 138 sailors aged between 7 and 14 were there eighteen sailors were from the NYC. The NYC group was one of the largest participating with sailors in all fleets. The sailors had 4 and a half days of sailing with mixed conditions and great racing. International and Irish coaches provided a full range of training, from first time Regatta fleet level through to Transition and to Main Fleets both Junior and Senior with a Regatta on the last day. We had great results from Main Fleet with Fiona Ferguson getting a 3rd and Conor Gorman and Hugh O’Conner getting 6th and 7th respectively in Senior Main Fleet and Conor Staunton getting a 1st overall in Regatta Fleet. Baltimore is an “ all hands on deck “ week ,with parents encouraged to lend a hand with the work that goes into making it such a special event. Helping out with making sailors lunches, doing slip duty, rescue on the water or safety checking of boats and organizing the social activities meant that parents had an opportunity to get to know each other just as well as the sailors did. The social activity kicked off for the NYC with a very romantic valentines dinner in Caseys on the Sunday night which comprised of 26 Parents and 37 children both Sailors and non sailors and a big thank you to Caseys for accommodating us. There was a Movie night and Disco night for the sailors not to be left out on the Disco night the Nyc parents had another dinner. There was a Ladies lunch for Mums and even Grandmothers. There was Schull and Fitbones for the non sailors which included a trip to Sherkin Island and a hike in Lough Hyne. There was only one non sailing day with a mad dash to the pool. There was the IODAI Forum in Bushes where David White gave a talk on the Ideal Oppie Parent which lead to interesting chat after. Also for older sailors there was Topper ,Laser and 4.20 Sailing in Schull with a variety of Parents doing lifts to and from Schull. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who made it such a success. Think we are looking forward to Baltimore 2017 already!
