NYC takes delivery of 4 new Wayfarers

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailNYC Wayfarers┬áThe Club took delivery of 4 new Wayfarers on St Patrick’s Day. Finished in dark blue and red waterline livery to match our Club burgee, this “mini one design fleet” will complement our existing fleet of Club boats geared towards Adult sailing (1720s, RS Ventures). The boats are name Miranda, Cressida, Cordelia and Desdemona in keeping with the “moons of Uranus” naming convention used for the RS Ventures (Bianca, Titania, Ophelia) The boats will be used for Adult Sail training for intermediate levels with a view to form candidates to racing helm and crew standard. They will also be available to book for a gentler sail for our family members. On Sunday 20th March, the owner and director of Hartley Boats (Richard Hartley) flew from the UK to formally hand over the boats and run a tuning / performance optimisation workshop attended by Club members and private Wayfarer owners. The 4 Club boats and 2 other private ones promptly joined the last day of racing in the DMYC Frostbite series for a “baptism of fire”, first impressions and a great photo session (see gallery below) So how did the new boats handle? Alan Dooley, Sailing Secretary, gives his first impressions: “…well I was most impressed with how easy they are to sail on all points. We did 4 laps of the trapezoid shaped race course, and Joe Hickey, my crew, grabbed the tiller and took us around again it was so enjoyable. Inside the boat is beautifully finished, and the main controls are well positioned and easy to operate. They are very stable, but for the less experienced, we have special floats which can easily be attached to the top of the mainsail. While we were racing the Wayfarers, it was great to see one of our RS Ventures being raced on charter by another NYC member…our fleet of boats looks really well on the water.   We have big plans for these 7 boats in the season ahead, and they include you, the club members. 1. We want the boats sailed in DBSC, by all member categories 2. Each Sunday will be fun on the water day, with a safety boat in attendance…a great chance to get out on the water 3. We will make a lot of use of the boats in this years Adult Sail Training Programme, which is completely remodelled. It will now extend for 10 weeks and is redesigned to focus on helming skills, and will have a strong racing aspect…we will get people racing in DBSC by the end of the course. Your help in getting candidates (friends, family, workplace…) for the course will be greatly appreciated. We are finalising procedures, pricing and logistics and will soon communicate to all members how can the NYC fleet of Club boats be booked by them!!
