‘Finding Saoirse’ – ladies 1720 report

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmail1720-ladies-team A NYC ladies team recently entered for the 1720 Europeans held in Dun Laoghaire from 16-18 June. The team are a group of NYC sailing mums who are more normally to be found shoreside, organising junior coaching and racing. They are part of a larger group of mums who regularly sail on the team club boats. The skipper and team organiser was Fiona Staunton. Fiona is an experienced sailor but the crew were of varying levels of experience and none had prior experience of sailing 1720s. In March, the goal was set for the Europeans Championships, we chartered NYC1, which we have since re-baptised ‘Finding Saoirse’ as it initially proved to be an impossible task, and began to train. Day one was challenging for the team with strong winds but all races were completed and the team got some great experience. The wind became progressively lighter over the following two days and the team also felt that their performance improved with each race and over each day. Overall some fantastic experience was gained and the team enjoyed networking with the other 1720 teams in the RIYC, RStGYC and NYC each evening! The Ladies group are extremely appreciative of the huge support, practical help and encouragement they have received from across the club and particularly from Olivier and Wayne in terms of getting the club boat race ready. Next goal –1720 Nationals in Cork this September! If you would like to get involved in women’s sailing, we are now launching a “Ladies Squad” which will be sailing on the depowered Club 1720 accompanied by an instructor every Tuesday evening (see separate post for more information).
