The Optimist Connachts took place in the Foynes Yacht Club on Saturday 11 th June and Sunday 12 June.

16 young sailors from the NYC took part in this event.

Conor Gorman, Fiona Ferguson, Georgia Mc Carthy, Leah Rickard, Natasha Hemeryck, Nathan Van Steenberge and Hugh Turvey entered Senior Fleet.

Clementine Van Steenberge, Clodagh Malone, David Corcoran, Ella Dempsey, Luke Turvey, and Zoe Hall entered Junior Fleet.

Billy Mc Carthy, Conor Staunton and Sam Ledoux entered Regatta Fleet.

It was a challenging event for the sailors with light winds on day one and mixed winds with squalls on day 2,mixed with shifty conditions and strong tide. Although the Regatta Fleet managed to get 4 races in on the first day, the Main fleets got no races in but by all accounts had great fun out on the water. The wind held on the second day to allow both Senior and Junior Fleet Sailors to have 3 races and Regatta Fleet had 5 additional races.

There was great NYC representation at the prizegiving with the following results:

Leah Rickard finished 1st Girl in the Senior Gold Fleet.

Nathan Von Steenberge finished 1st place overall in the Senior Silver Fleet.

Sam Ledoux finished 1st place overall in the Regatta Fleet.

All of our young sailors sailed really well over the 2 days. Our main fleet sailors were supported by our two coaches Claudine Murphy and Guy Alpin throughout the event.

All Parents and sailors were warmly welcomed by the volunteers at Foynes Yacht Club and we would like to thank James Mc Cormack the Commodore and all the Volunteers in particular Ken Cunnane and Kevin Reidy.
