The Optimist Ulsters took place in the Malahide Yacht Club Broadmeadows on Saturday 2nd July and Sunday 3rd July.

20 young sailors from the NYC took part in this event.

Conor Gorman, Leah Rickard, Nathan Van Steenberge, Hugh O’Connor, Eoghan Turner, Hugh Turvey, Louis Marie Jullo and Ellen Madigan entered Senior Fleet.

Clementine Van Steenberge, Clodagh Malone, Ella Dempsey, Luke Turvey, Zoe Hall, Sophie Gorman, Sam Ledoux and Rachel Flood entered Junior Fleet.

Benjamin Reeser, Conor Staunton, Edward Dempsey and Pierce Malone entered Regatta Fleet.

It was a challenging event for the sailors many of whom were sailing on an estuary for the first time with very strong winds on day one with squalls gusting over 30 knots. There were more settled conditions but with winds continuing to be very shifty for the second day. Although the Regatta Fleet were cancelled on the first day they got five races in on the second day.

Nathan Von Steenberge finished 1st place overall in the Senior Silver Fleet.

Conor Gorman finished 3rd place overall in the Senior Gold Fleet.

Benjamin Reeser finished 3rd place overall in Regatta Fleet.

A special Award for Fair sailing was presented to Leah Rickard in the Senior Gold Fleet.

A special Award for effort and skill was presented to Pierce Malone in the Regatta Fleet.

All of our young sailors sailed really well over the 2 days. Our main fleet sailors were supported by our two coaches Claudine Murphy and Will Byrne throughout the event.
