Dun Laoghaire Optimist Group (DOG’s) report

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmail    WINTER 2016/  SPRING 2017  The Coaching for the Dun Laoghaire Optimist Group finished  on Sunday the 9th April. 14 NYC who had qualified to compete in the Trials which take place in Ballyholme this week participated. The sailors were involved in two separate programmes in Winter and Spring which saw sailors from  the Dun Laoghaire Yacht Clubs sailing together and there was great opportunity for race practise and tactical learning as a result. In addition there was great cooperation from all parents regarding launching and duties and many thanks to Kevin Leonard and Mark McGibney of the RIYC who facilitated the NYC sailors for the lift in and out. The programme has been running very successfully for a number of years however this year there were a number of additional elements. The Introduction of Clinics by International Coaches was a great success and the children participated in clinics involving fitness /tactics and sailing. A big thanks to David Bolger and Billy Riordan of the RSGYC for  organising this new addition. It was  a great opportunity for our coaches to have an insight in to what other countries focus on in terms of similar programmes. There were also a number of parent organised regattas which were a huge success and thanks to Sarah and David Gorman  for all their organisation. It also promoted great camaraderie between all the parents who joined in their efforts to ensure that the regattas were well run. The sailors themselves have had a great programme but also have experienced great friendships with birthday celebrations being celebrated with cakes after racing and balloon decorated optimists launching, in addition to the hard work throughout the programmes. Many thanks to the coaches Guy Aplin, Cian Mollen, Conor Totterdale and Conor O’Beirne who worked so hard with the sailors throughout the programme.  A special thank you to Olivier for all the help he gave with regard to the programme it was essential in the ensuring of it’s success.  A big thank you also to Carmen for  all the admin work that was involved. Another thanks is to the Parents who volunteered on Saturdays and Sundays to help out on slip duties without this help it would be impossible to run a successful programme.  All focus now turns to the Trials this week in Ballyholme where the Sailors will be hoping for success, we wish them all the best of luck. After the Trials  the regionals recommence for 2017 with the Munsters in Kinsale in May.    Rebecca Hall, Sarah Gorman, David Gorman img_0865       img_3865        img_4611
