Optimist Ulsters update 2017

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailAs part of a fleet of over 100 Optimists, 16 NYC sailors competed at the Ulsters Regional Championships at the weekend 10 – 11 June in the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club. Despite difficult conditions, three races were completed on Saturday but high winds led the race committee to abandon racing on Sunday. Nevertheless the brave NYC sailors made it out onto the water on Sunday for a training session. The final results show a strong performance by NYC. Congratulations to Hugh Turvey who finished 4th and Conor Gorman 5th in Senior Gold Fleet. Louis-Marie Jullo came 4th in Senior Silver Fleet. In Junior Gold Fleet Luke Turvey finished 1st with a fantastic three bullets and Sam Ledoux finished in 3rd place. Well done to Main Fleet sailors Nathan Vansteenberge, Eoghan Turner, Zoe Hall, Clementine Vansteenberge, Lucia Cullen, Rachel Flood and Conor Staunton who sailed extremely well in challenging conditions. The Regatta Fleet sailors did well completing three races including Adelaide Jullo, James Hall, Lizzie Hall and Kate Flood from NYC. During the event the Dun Laoghaire clubs NYC, RStGYC and RIYC joined up for Main Fleet coach support led by Pieter Van den Bossche, Guy Aplin, Paddy Young, Paddy Cahill and Ross. This followed a week of intensive training for many of the sailors in Dun Laoghaire as part of the ongoing OMG programme. Congratulations also to the teams who received their training gear to represent Ireland this summer at the European Championships in Bulgaria, the French Nationals and the U-12 team at the UK nationals. Thanks to all the training and event coordinators including David Bolger and Billy Riordan from RStGYC for continued cooperation with NYC. A special thanks to the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club for their wonderful welcome and super event in trying conditions. Full results available on
