Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta – NYC Report

Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta – NYC Report

As sailing events go, Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta is big by any measure, so there is no surprise that this year's National Yacht Club hosted VDLR prizegiving on Sunday evening was an equally big affair with hundreds of sailors gathered to salute the winners at Ireland's largest sailing event.  There were NYC winners a plenty and a fantastic atmosphere prevailed all across the platform and throughout the Club.

The ceremony brought the curtain down on four days of thrilling sailing where almost 2,000 sailors in 400 boats took on heavy weather conditions on Dublin Bay.

Congratulations to all our members who took part and for many who climbed on the podium in their class!!

NYC’s newest flagship aims high!

NYC’s newest flagship aims high!

Exactly two weeks ago today, Johnny & Tina Treanor stepped the mast on their new J112e Grand Prix in Hamble, UK. With the tight knit crew, headed up by Evan O'Connor, working to get the boat race-fit, it was weighed for its rating; kitted out with sails; marks were programmed into the nav system & brand new sheets were bent on almost as the first gun went at the UK J-Cup event the following day.

Long-standing NYC member, Johnny Treanor, along with Nicole Hemeryck, showed dead-eye qualities on the helm. Dara Totterdell took navigation & pit, Adam Winkleman took the mainsail while other crew members came from Wexford via Athens; Cork as well as other DL waterfront clubs.

Kinsale Yacht Club Present Inaugural ‘Jack Roy Perpetual Trophy’ at Sovereign’s Cup as Johnny Treanor’s Valentina shines at the Sovereigns

Kinsale Yacht Club Present Inaugural ‘Jack Roy Perpetual Trophy’ at Sovereign’s Cup as Johnny Treanor’s Valentina shines at the Sovereigns

Kinsailor, the Kinsale Yacht Club Under-25 J24 crew were the inaugural winners of the 'Jack Roy Perpetual Trophy', awarded to the best female helm at Saturday night's 2023 Simply Blue Sovereign's Cup prizegiving.

The trophy was commissioned by the club and made in West Cork.

KYC created the award as a mark of appreciation to the late Jack Roy's running of many events for the club, particularly as Race Officer and Principal Race Officer for The Sovereign's Cup Regatta for many years.

The club asked his wife, Rosemary, who also officiates at Sovereign's Cup races, to present the trophy to the inaugural winners.

The Roy's eldest daughter Jill thanked the club on behalf of the Roy family, highlighting how Jack loved everything about Kinsale Yacht Club and particularly enjoyed his involvement in the Sovereign's Cup.

Jill Roy's words were met with the biggest applause of the night as the packed clubhouse remembered their much-missed race officer.

We take this opportunity to also salute the great performance of Johnny Treanor placing his yacht 'Valentina' 2nd overall in both IRC and ECHO in the Coastal Class.
