Expression of interest: becoming a keelboat instructor

With the growing interest in match racing on our 4 Eliotts and learning the skills necessary to sail successfully on our J80s, the club has recognised we need a few qualified keelboat instructors in order to introduce and develop sailors through the Irish Sailing small boat sailing scheme.

If interested in becoming a keelboat instructor, you must already hold a valid instructor certification and go through the process.

Doing this will also re-validate any existing SBSS instructor qualifications (including Senior Instructor) which might be useful for anyone coming near the end of their validity.:

  • pre-entry assessment day
  • 2 days conversion course
  • we are also looking at an added day to obtain the advanced instructor certificate for suitable candidates.

Irish Ruffian 23s Win Golden Jubilee International Inter-Port in Hong Kong

Irish Ruffian 23s Win Golden Jubilee International Inter-Port in Hong Kong

Ann Kirwan, former Commodore of Dublin Bay Sailing Club and a longtime NYC enthusiastic Ruffian 23 sailor  captures the flavour for us with her report of this remarkable event on the other side of the world:

HONG KONG HOSTS FINAL SAILING EVENT OF RUFFIAN 23 GOLDEN JUBILEE

A team of 20 Irish Ruffian sailors travelled to Hong Kong on Wednesday, October 18th, to compete in the Golden Jubilee Ruffian Inter-Port Regatta, the 7th Interport Challenge. The first two took place in the early ’90s before the event was revived in 2009, when the Irish Ruffians were invited to Hong Kong. Since then, the event has been held every three years in alternate locations, but the 2021 visit to Hong Kong was delayed by two years due to Covid. However, this turned out to be very fortuitous, as 2023 is the 50th anniversary year of the Ruffian fleet.

NYC’s Tom Dolan (With Onboard Reporter) Prepare for Second Round Ireland Speed Record Bid

NYC’s Tom Dolan (With Onboard Reporter) Prepare for Second Round Ireland Speed Record Bid

Irish solo sailor and NYC Member Tom Dolan is back in Ireland with his Figaro Beneteau 3 Smurfit Kappa Kingspan, aiming to set a Round Ireland speed sailing record, a bid sparking debate about the status of solo sailing in Irish waters and the records themselves, which Afloat concluded in May, was all a bit of a mess.

Tom wants to break the long-standing record of 4 days, 1 hour and 53 minutes and 29 seconds established by Michel Kleinjans aboard a Class40 in 2005, but, he says, the World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSRC) do not accept singlehanded record attempts, so Dolan has lodged a double-handed speed record bid.

"I will be sailing around Ireland single-handed with an onboard reporter (OBR)", he explained to Afloat...

Remembering Liam Shanahan Senior…by Winkie Nixon

Remembering Liam Shanahan Senior…by Winkie Nixon

Liam Shanahan Snr was widely known in the sailing community as a determined offshore racing and cruising owner-skipper and a pillar of the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, both as a longtime Club Trustee and a racing and sea-going achiever. He and his family regularly added to the club’s annual haul of significant trophies won locally, nationally and internationally. And he did this through sailing skills started while working abroad, and then honed in Dublin Bay racing, ISORA competition, and offshore majors such as the Dun Laoghaire to Dingle and Round Ireland races.

He was the personification of success achieved through shrewd career choices, a willingness to travel to further his work objectives, an ability to work very hard indeed, and a determination that - in time - he and his growing family’s remarkable life would be firmly Ireland-centric....
