Spring training starts again this Sunday the 5th of February

We are planning 5 Sundays with a full weekend of Interclub Laser Training with RStGYC and RIYC. This will hopefully  be on the 25th to the 26th of February (we are awaiting confirmation from RStGYC regarding dates that suit them)

The first event of the season will be the Spring Challenge in the RStGYC  on the 17th to the 18th of March this will be a great way to put all your training into practice.

This will be followed by the Laser Munsters in Baltimore West Cork at Easter weekend ( 7th/8th April) which is always lots of fun with big fleets and a great atmosphere. Families often make this a mini break as there is lots of accommodation available and many things to do for all ages in the area.

Then we have the Mitsubishi Youth Event which is run between the NYC and RStGYC from 12th to the 15th of April. This year there are sailors coming from New Zealand. Portugal, France, UK etc. to compete as a practice event for the ISAFs this summer. This   should be an exciting event and as it is on your doorstep its a must!

I would first like to thank all the volunteers that helped last year. It was a very busy and successful sailing season. I would also like to thank all the Members who regularly contribute their time, expertise, boats and spirited efforts to make it all happen. It would simply not be possible without you.

Your continual involvement and support has positioned the NYC as the leading sailing venue in Ireland for Senior and Junior racing as well as training events.

This was recently recognised as the National Yacht Club has been nominated the Mitsubishi Motors / Irish Independent Sailing Club of the Year 2012!

The 2012 sailing calendar promises to be another exciting season and will again require all your good will and club volunteer spirit to bring it to another successful completion.

As you will see from the attached volunteer form, the sailing schedule major national and international events, including the 4th edition of the Mitsubishi Youth National Championships, the “4 Stars Pizzas” ISAF Youth Worlds, the Laser Nationals and the very exciting Multihull One Design 70’ inaugural European Tour.

Olivier, Sandra Moore and all the boathouse team need your support to run them smoothly and I would like to thank you in advance for all your contributions, which will help, once again, to fly the NYC burgee high and proud over the Dublin Bay waters and beyond.

On Friday 24^th Feb, we will play our first outing of 2012 at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club (the new course) – a new venue for us. This is a superb and very well maintained course in a very scenic location, and promises to be a great start to the 2012 season.

We will play in 3’s, and as usual, there will be team and individual competitions, along withLongest Driveand Nearest Pin tests.

Brendan is working on a new handicap system, so be sure to check your adjustment – you might get an unexpected bonus (or a rather unpleasant surprise!).

The plan is to be back at The National for Fish & Chips and presentation and a bit of craic afterwards. Even if you cannot make the golf, come to the NYC afterwards and meet everyone.

We are always keen to welcome new members and visitors. If you have not played with the Society before, come and join us, or if you’d like to bring a few friends they will be made very welcome too. If you have any queries, text to the golf phone (086-078 4467).

This is outing number 1 of 8. The details of all the outings are on www.nyc.ie/social so get the dates into your diary – we have several great locations this year.

The Golfer of the Year Trophy will be awarded for the player with the best 6 results out of the 8 outings. Tony C is the current holder, and as a Dun Laoghaire G.C. member, is sure to get off to a blazing start (in spite of the impending massive adjustments to his handicap) – no pressure Tony!.

Meet at southern end (Bray Head) of Bray Promenade

Meeting at the car park at the far end of Bray Promenade opposite the amusement arcade at 12 noon.  Parking is free in the seafront carparks on Sundays.

This is a relatively easy walk of some 6/7kms (3kms each way) along the cliff path from Bray to Greystones and back.  Alternatively if you do not wish to walk back you can go on to the station at the far end of Greystones and take the DART back.  The trains apprear to run every 30/40 minutes but it would be as well to check on timetables beforehand as trains may be infrequent on Sunday afternoon.

New members and friends including families are very welcome and comfortable walking shoes or trainers should be sufficient.  Bring a light picnic lunch to eat at Greystones Pier.

• Test event for organisers of the ISAF Youth World Championships to be held in Dun Laoghaire 12-21 July 2012

Youth teams from Great Britain, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan and Canada expected to travel to the ISA Mitsubishi Nationals in preparation for the ISAF Worlds in July In April (12th-15th) over 400 sailors will compete in Dublin Bay in seven different classes (Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, 420, Feva, Topper, 29er and Optimist). For youth sailors, this event is the most important in the annual calendar as it is the decider for the top Irish sailors to compete internationally during 2012 and is the pathway for future Olympic sailors.

Not only will the ISA Mitsubishi Youth Nationals be an important event for youth sailors it is also a major milestone for the organisers of the ISAF Youth Worlds 2012 as it offers them the opportunity to finalise the logistics of managing such a large event incorporating three clubs, three race courses and hundreds of volunteers.

‘We are in the final planning stage for the ISAF Youth Worlds so it is a great opportunity for the organising committee and the hundreds of committed volunteers to test drive systems during the ISA Mitsubishi Youth Nationals just three months in advance of the youth worlds which is the considered the youth Olympics in the sailing world’ stated Event Chairman Brian Craig.

In excess of 350 sailors and windsurfing champions from over 60 nations will participate in July 2012. The granting of this prestigious sailing event to Ireland is a major boost to the sport and secures Ireland’s position as an ideal location for hosting world class sailing events. It also establishes Dun Laoghaire as one of the prime major racing locations in the world, capable of running multiple classes and courses to the highest international standard.

‘The ISA Mitsubishi Youth Nationals is a significant event on the racing calendar. It involves young sailors from all of the ‘Olympic Pathway’ classes, some of whom are competing for places on the team that will represent Ireland in the ISAF Youth Worlds which will be held in Ireland for the first time in July. The ISA Mitsubishi Nationals are even more important for young Irish sailors this year as they will be sailing alongside some of the best youth teams in the world preparing for July’ commented ISA Chief Executive Harry Hermon

Mitsubishi Motors have been a proud supporter of junior sailing in Ireland for the last 8 years. In recent years Ireland has had successes at youth level with winner of the girls Laser World Championships, a top 10 at the 2010 ISAF Youth Worlds and wins at the British National Optimist Championships. Mitsubishi Motors have played an important role in these successes by sponsoring the Youth Nationals.

Four hundred sailors from around the country are expected to compete for national youth and junior pathway titles and the Mitsubishi coaching grant during the event. As this will be a test event for the ISAF Youth Worlds, teams from other countries such as Great Britain, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan and Canada have expressed an interest in participating. It is recommended that sailors register early for this event at www.dublinbay2012.com
