After 16 races over 6 days in Dublin Bay and Dunmore East, in a series that challenged the sailors in all weather conditions, light winds, heavy winds and lumpy seas, Douglas Elmes of WHSC/RCYC emerged as the winner beating last year’s winner, Sophie Browne TBSC/RCYC into second place.

The top 19 sailors qualified for the coveted green lifejacket and to sail for the Irish Team this summer. Congratulations to the two National Yacht Club sailors included in the team; Daniel Raymond who qualified for the European Team to race in the European Championships in Italy and Heather Spain who qualified for the International Development Team to race in the French Nationals in Brittany.

Congratulations too to Loghlen Rickard who stepped off a plane from Florida, where he has spent the winter,  and straight onto the water to qualify for the Irish under 12s squad who will sail in the British Nationals in August.

Qualifying for trials is based on a sailor’s results in last years Optimist events and is a great achievement in itself.

Congratulations to all sailors who competed in the Trials event, particularly those who qualified for the first time.

Jazz at the NYC was posted on NYC

Everyone now has a ditigal camera or a camera on their phone and most events that take place in the Club are recorded on an informal basis. Not so in the past!!

Past Commodore, Peter Ryan, has undertaken to scan and catalogue all old documents and photographs that members might have relating to the National Yacht Club. All material will be posted on the NYC website and access will be restricted to NYC members only.

To this end he asks that members who have photographs and documents would either email scanned copies of the data to him at pamryan@indigo.ie or leave the originals in the office in a sealed envelope with their name and contact number and marked for his attention. Photographs should be scanned into .jpeg format while documents shall be .pdf format. All original documents received will be scanned and returned safely to the owners. All data received will be credited to the provider.

If supplying photographs it would be particularly useful and informative to write a caption for the photograph on a “post-it”, stuck to the back of the photograph.

Relevant documents could be old menus from functions, reports etc. We are missing some editions of old “NYC News” and “Up Helm”. All available editions of these publications and of Mainsheet are posted on the Member restricted page in the website – Follow this LINK if you have access.

The MC for the presentation was “Winkie” Nixon who introduced Gavin Flood and Group Managing Director, Billy Riordan of Mitsubishi Motors Ireand. The presentation to our Commodore, Paul Barrington was made by Billy Riordan.

During the formalities the Commodore presented donations from the NYC Sailing Development Fund to Annalise Murphy, Finn Lynch and brothers Sean and Tadgh Donnelly.

“Winkie” closed the formalities by accusing our founder Commodore, the Earl of Granard, of introducing the grey squirrel to Ireland!!!!!

This was a very special night for the National Yacht Club.

“Club of the Year” Presentation Reception. was posted on NYC

The course will use 1720’s (racing keelboats) and Toppers dinghies.  On the water sessions will be weather permitting. The course will have a Maximum of 20 participants.

A Log book will be provided to course participants and a certificate on completion of the course.

The course will run from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and will be starting on the 6th of June

Course fees:

Members €200

Non Members €240

Fee includes sailing supper on last night.

Adult Sail Training 2012 was posted on NYC

The race is a 100 mile Round Ireland qualifier. Weather permitting, the course will include rounding the wind turbines on the Arklow Bank.

lynx metmAsts will be hosting a reception in Pwllheli Sailing Club for all entrants on the evening before the race. Details of this will be announced nearer the date.

lynx metmAsts will be presenting a new trophy to the Overall winner of the race. It is hoped that this presentation will take place immediately after the race in Wicklow Sailing Club.

ISORA feels that this association with lynx metmAsts will help promote its offshore racing to a wider audience and will greatly help in attracting more new boats to its race series.

First around the M2 was “English Mick” followed by “Sgrech”. This order remained to the finish line in Holyhead. While the last leg was a fetch, the approach into Holyhead was tricky with the strong tides. Boats that went south with the ebbing tide after the M2 were rewarded with being swept in Holyhead Bay by the following flood tide. The three “J” boats crossed the line one after the other but “ Joker 2” and “Jedi” could not catch “Sgrech”.

“Sgrech” won Overall and Class 1 while “Adelie” took Class 2. “Lancastrian” won Class 1 Silver Fleet. Five boats retired.

As usual there was a great get together in Holyhead Sailing Club after the race.

The next race is the 100 mile Round Ireland qualifier from Conwy to Howth on the 19th May. Those crew who intend to get the ferry over on the Friday should book now as the “rugby chaps” are making their way to Twickenham for the Hineken Cup Final. I propose to arrange transport from Holyhead to Conway meeting the HSS from Dun Laoghaire. I will circulate maore about this later.

“Sgrech” Screams to Race 2 Victory in ISORA was posted on NYC

To celebrate our fifth win of this award the Club would like to welcome all members to the Award Presentation night on the 9th of May.

The reception will take place from 7pm where we will be presented with the famous ship’s wheel trophy.

The award was devised to honour and encourage the efforts of sailing clubs and associations nationwide and it is an honour to welcome the trophy back to the club again.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Invite to ‘Sailing Club of the Year Awards 2012′ was posted on NYC

I attach the sailing instruction for the race on Saturday 5th May. As I am awaiting entries from some other boats who have indicated they are entering I have not prepared the entry list yet. I will circulate same by Wednesday latest.

I have a list of crew available if any boat is short. However, I ask you to contact me as soon as possible if you need crew. I have some people who are trying to get racing experience prior to the Round Ireland Race. I also have people who want to do the Round Ireland Race.

As the following race will start in Conwy on the 19th May, 40 miles east of Holyhead, some boats are intending on delivering to Conwy from Holyhead next Sunday after the race while others are intending on leaving their boats in Holyhead. I am willing to coordinate information between boats who might want to share delivery crew of transport back etc. Please contact me. I have asked Holyhead Sailing Club if there is some concession on the marina for boats remaining in Holyhead. More on this later.

Regarding the Conwy Race, ISORA Sailor Keith Mander has arranged a great event in Conwy. He has arranged a great event in the Mulberry Bar & Restaurant on the Friday night. It is a spectacular place overlooking the Conwy marina. Keith has prepared some extracts from charts and advice on entering Conwy – you need to be very careful with tides. There is also a marina on the Deganwy side of the channel beside an excellent hotel – The Quay Hotel. Keith has arranged a ferry taxi between the Quay marina and the Conwy marina and the Mulberry. I will post all these tips on the News section of the ISORA website. I also found an excellent golf club beside the Conwy marina!!!!

As advised before the first race the Royal Alfred Yacht Club are running a mini three race coastal series of the three ISORA day races from Dun Laoghaire. They will be awarding prizes for the winners. The entry fee for their series is €20. Any boat completing those three races should enter this mini series. I attach their entry form and conditions. I have agreed with the RAYC that they will still accept entries for the series. The completed entries can be sent to the address on the form or I can take them in the NYC on Friday night.

After the blast last Saturday, we are in good shape for an easy ride to Holyhead and a great get together over there. There will be catering available in Holyhead. As usual there will be full catering in the NYC on Friday night before the race. I hope to see many of you there.
