Update on the Optimist Nationals

NYC sailors take titles at Optimist National Championships

In one of the most exciting Irish National championships, NYC sailors did the club proud demonstrating great talent and skill over the 4-day event at the RIYC in Dun-Laoghaire, 17 – 20 August.

Mixed conditions and particularly windy weather tested all sailors to the full. The excellent results reflect the hard work carried out over the winter and past months.

NYC Sailor Loghlen Rickard Takes Top Youth Result in Laser Radial Leinster Championship

NYC Sailors has a strong performance in this past weekend’s Laser Championships held in Rush. The event was held from August 5th-6th in Rush Sailing Club, with 2 races held in light winds on day one and 3 races in heavy winds in day two. NYC sailor Loghlen Rickard took the Youth title in the Radial Division (2nd overall, with 2 bullets in the 5 races), with NYC sailors Nicole Hemeryck first girl (4th overall), Nell Stanton (10th overall), and Clare Gorman taking 15th overall in the competitive 41 boat fleet.

In the 4.7 class, NYC sailor Nicholas Reeser took second overall in the 24 boat fleet. There we no NYC representatives in the 18 boat full rig fleet.

NYC Sailor Loghlen Rickard is Youth Laser Radial North American Champion

NYC sailor Loghlen Rickard was the Youth Laser Radial North American Champion (6th overall). He competed at the Laser North American Laser North American Championships hosted by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, June 21 – 25, 2017 in English Bay, Vancouver Canada. The racing was held over 4 days of varied light to medium winds. Loghlen started strong with a bullet in race one, and had 8 top 5 finishes in the 12 race event. Fort Lauderdale’s Sophia Reineke and Loghlen came off the water after 12 races tied on points in 1st and 2nd – but a controversial protest saw them both DSQ’d in race 12 and resulted in Vancouver Yacht Club’s own two-time Olympian taking the top step of the podium.
