Powerboat 1 & 2

National Powerboat Certificate (“Level II”) at the NYC

Course Date: 4th – 5th September 2010

Rib 4

Over the weekend of September 4th & 5th, nine NYC member candidates attended the ISA National powerboat certificate training hosted by the NYC which is an ISA training centre.

This scheme provides training for those using open powerboats (and ribs) on coastal and inland waters.

The aim of the course is to develop the skills and knowledge that allow participants to safely and effectively skipper an open powerboat by day on waters with which they are familiar.

The two day course is split between theory (chart work, knots, safety, meterology etc) and practice afloat with most of the time being on the water. Full course details on the ISA website www.sailing.ie under training.

With a teaching ratio of 3:1 the course was conducted by NYC member instructors: Mal Nowlan, Gearoid O’Riain & Ronan Beirne.

Further courses will be conducted and interested participants should leave their name with Olivier; sailing@nyc.ie

Plans are already in place for an adult and transition year courses, dates to be arranged.

Safety Boat Operation Course

d2d_09_05The National Yacht Club and Royal St George Yacht Club have identified a need to ensure that we have a significant group of qualified rib operators available to act in support of major sailing events hosted by the respective clubs.

Of immediate concern is having a crew in place to support the Mitsubishi Youth Championships in May 2010. As you might be aware this event is being used as a precursor to and practice for, the ISAF World Youth Championships being held in Dun Laoghaire in 2012.

We are looking for rib owners and potential drivers who would be willing:
A.) To undertake such safety courses as deemed necessary by the organisers
B.) To volunteer to act in support of such events.

To determine the interest there may be within the club, could you complete the following and return it as quickly as possible. Once we have expressions of interest we will negotiate a group rate with the respective instructors. I should point out that the cost of these courses will be borne by the individual taking part – not by the organisers. Some comfort might be derived from the fact that we will be able to offer a significant saving on the cost of such courses if bought individually and you will be helping your fellow club members.
