Golf Spoils Lovely Day at Woodbrook

FacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailGolf Outing to Woodbrook Golf Club, Fri 12th April 2013 _CP11560Yet again we were blessed by the weather people in Met Eireann…after several wintry months with incessant easterlies chilling the bones, the sun finally arrived to greet the 37 golfers who took part. Woodbrook was in very good condition considering the weather that preceded us, and the greens in particular were surprisingly quick and challenging. We got away bang on schedule at 09:30, led by the Rooney / Nicholl 4-ball, and had the tee up until 10:40, with a few playing in the afternoon by special arrangement. It looked like a day for high scores, with bright conditions, and a light breeze, but the course proved to be a hard nut to crack, and did not concede points easily. Ladies winner was Anne McQuaid with 30 points, with Penny Rooney just 2 shots back and Mary Wharton a shot further adrift. Liam Nicholl won the men’s competition with 36 points, followed by our incoming Golf Secretary, Terry O’Brien on 33. Roger and Tony were tied a further shot back, and the bulk of the field were clustered on 29 points or better…I think our members are starting to take the golf too seriously. The winning team (we’ll never hear the end of this!) was Peter Ryan, Padraic Conneely, Vincent Farrell and Adam Winkelmann – these guys must be dope tested before the next outing…they’d probably all pass. Adam outdrove Roger on 18 to win the gargantuan drive competition, while James Bond (Tony) nearly got a hole-in-wan on 17 to take the NP prize. Back at the National, a much bigger crowd than expected arrived to be fed (excellently) and wined – a most enjoyable night to cap off a great day…and Tony, it was not a black tie affair, (but the girls thought you were lovely!) Massive thanks to Jim and Hilda without whom we would not have an operational golf society, and a big welcome to Terry who agreed to come on committee. The Golf Society is in very good health thanks to your committee, your support, and the strong fun element which prevails. Next outing is to the beautiful Woodenbridge Golf Club, which is about 50 minutes down the M11. This is not only a great golf course, but a really pretty place where we are always made very welcome. Date – Friday 10th May, 14:00 (afternoon tee time), meal at Woodenbrdge Golf Club. Also, time to start thinking about our Dingle outing, which is always a bit of fun. This will probably be on June 11th and 12th. We will have a special rate from the Skellig Hotel – more details next week.
