Topper Southerns Results

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailThis weekend saw 38 sailors from all over Ireland competing in the Topper Southern Championships which was hosted by the NYC. Our Club was represented by Jack Hall, Nicholas Reeser, Eoghan Turner, Deirdre Turner, Caoimhe Seymour, Caoimhe Byrne, Ethan Spain and Ella O’Malley. A well organised training session with Coaches Grainne Young and Jack Fahy (Last Year’s National Topper Champion) preceded the championship itself with 10 participants on Friday 16th June. This set the scene nicely for the event itself challenging our sailors. The championship on Saturday had sailors aging in range from 11 years to 16 years with 7 in the 4.2 rig. Races were held on a large challenging course in Dublin with a force 3 sea Breeze and perfect sunshine! Overnight there were 3 leaders making this a very exciting finish to the first days racing. Sunday morning conditions were light and the racing was postponed for one hour until the sea breeze kicked in. A smaller course was skilfully set by the Race Officer and his hard working Mark Laying team and three more racing were completed in winds of a force 2-3 ESE with perfect sunshine. The Overall Championship went to Rory Williamson of East Antrim Boat Club. First Overall Lady went to Kate D’Arcy of Royal Cork Yacht Club. First Under 17 went to our NYC Nicolas Reeser, first Under 14 went to Eoghan Turner also of the NYC and the first Under 12 went to Daniel Corbett of the Co Antrim Yacht Club . Ethan Spain of the NYC took 3rd overall in the Under 12’s and Deirdre Turner came in a gallant 7th place in the Under 17’s.  NYC members demonstrated superb volunteering skills and were out in force to welcome our visitors. We thank everyone for their commitment to the day and congratulate all our sailors who did us proud both on and off the water. Clodagh O’Connor and Dave Turner.
