Optimist Leinsters 2018


The NYC featured strongly in the Optimist Leinsters which took place in Howth Yacht Club last weekend.

Twenty six sailors from the NYC took part in this event across 3 fleets.

Fiachra Mc Donnell, Rian Geraghty- Mc Donnell, Luke Turvey, Conor Gorman, Nathan van Steenberge, Leah Rickard, Sam Ledoux, Hugh Turvey, Thomas O’Neill, Lauren O’Callaghan, Christian Ennis, Ella Dempsey and Rachel Flood sailed in the Senior Fleet.


Clementine van Steenberge, Lucia Cullen, Rocco Wright, Edward Dempsey, Hugo Crawford, Conor Staunton, Adelaide Jullo and Ava Ennis sailed in Junior Fleet.


 Caoilinn Mc Donnell, James Hall, Lizzie Hall, Kate Flood and Grace Gavin sailed in the Regatta Fleet.

 There were 6 races sailed in both Senior and Junior Main Fleets in very windy conditions over the weekend with 5 sailed in the Regatta Fleet.

There was great NYC representation at the prize giving with the following results:


Senior Fleet

Fiachra Mc Donnell finished 4th place overall, Rian Geraghty-Mc Donnell finished 5th place overall, Luke Turvey finished 6th place overall, Conor Gorman finished 9th place overall, Nathan van Steenberge finished 10th place overall, Leah Rickard finished,11th place overall and Sam Ledoux finished 13th place overall.


Junior Fleet


 Clementine van Steenberge finished 2nd place overall and 1 st Girl in the Junior Gold Fleet ,Lucia Cullen finished 7 th place overall and Rocco Wright finished 13th place overall.


Regatta Fleet


 Caoilinn Mc Donnell finished 1 st place overall and 1 st U10, Kate Flood was 1 st U 11.


The IDT French Team with NYC sailors Clementine van Steenberge and Fiachra McDonnell were presented with their kit we wish them well in the event.



All of our young sailors sailed really well over the 2 days in very windy conditions.

All Parents and sailors were warmly welcomed by the volunteers at Howth Yacht Club.

Parents were treated to tea, coffee and delicious scones, we would like to thank to NYC coaches Cian Mollen and Hugh Perrette for the on the water support for the main fleet and to Dan Raymond for Regatta Fleet.

Thanks also to all those that brought ribs over for coach support and safety.

Entries open for Connachts and 2018 Irish Nationals

Entries for the 2018 Irish Nationals taking place in Kinsale Yacht Club are now open. 

Entries are now also open for the Connachts, taking place in Lough Derg Sailing Club.  This year they are taking place over the weekend of July 7thand 8th.

We would encourage you enter as soon as possible. 

  • Entry for the Connachts is €60:03 and the early entry fee closes at 10pm (sharp) on Friday June 22nd. From June 22ndthe fee goes up to €120:03
  • Final closing date is Wed 27thJune, at 10pm sharp
  • Open to: Regatta Fleet/ Snr Fleet/ Jnr Fleet
