While the Brains of the Bay champions Wizard are off sunning themselves in gentler climes, the final quiz of the 2023/24 season took place on Wednesday, 3rd April, when 18 teams joined us to dine ahead of a typically exasperating set of quiz questions. A competitive heat had several team teams lead the way through the evening, with Grasshopper, T.B.M., The Dirty Ruckers, and Celtic Boys all holding the lead at one point before Enchantress stayed on well in the home straight to storm clear.

It was some Enchantress-ed evening* (the Quizmaster has run out of magic-related puns) as Enchantress benefitted from a slip by T.B.M. to gain 2nd place in the overall series by the margin of a single point. Corner Boys did a Lazarus and came 4th, with Stars of the Sea continuing their good end-of-season form to take 5th spot overall. Former Commodore Martin McCarthy was on hand to present Enchantress their prizes on the night (pictured).

Through the winter, we had a big number of teams participate in the quizzes – 24 in total! – and each evening provides great competition and amusement. All members are encouraged to come along and join us in this enjoyable and sociable round of events. We will be back in October (dates to be confirmed) and all are welcome.

* You may see a stranger, across a crowded room, and somehow you know

Quiz update

The 10th instalment of our regular winter quiz series on Wednesday 20th March saw a return to the winners’ podium for T.B.M.   â€“ the only team this year to have beaten Wizard in open competition. Enchantress came second with a posse of teams grouped in third.

On the overall Leaderboard, there is still strong competition for the overall 2nd place with T.B.M. leading Corner Boys and Enchantress for that coveted (sic) position, notable to posterity.

Our next and final quiz of the season takes place on 3rd April combining a dinner and a quiz – all participating teams should reserve a place in the dining room. We look forward to seeing you all there, when dining will commence at 7.30pm, with the quiz kicking off at c.8.30pm.

Quiz update

What do The Corner Boys and The Salopettes have in common?  They have both come second to Wizard twice this season! Whether the comparison is to Manchester City, or Willie Mullins, or Ronnie O’Sullivan, it is clear that team Wizard have the quiz edge over the rest of the field. So far!

On Wednesday night, 7 February, Wizard won the 7th instalment of the NYC quiz series 2023/24, chalking up their 4th success of season with a deserved win over The Corner Boys by a single point. Tsuquizmi shone in 3rd with T.B.M. continuing their consistent run by finishing 4th.  Wizard have now moved to the overall lead with 4 quizzes remaining.

The Quizmaster has been asked to search for Wizard’s kryptonite –a reflection of the fact that the team must have superpowers. Has anyone got Lex Luthor’s phone number?

The quiz will resume on Wednesday, the 21st February, at 8.00pm sharp. See you all there.

The NYC quiz resumed on Wednesday (24 January) with a continuation of a great turnout for the season, bolstered by the participation of a new team Rex (the Quizmaster could not spell Tyranosawrus Tirannasaurus 
 any other part of the name!).

End of season form continued as the top two at the Christmas quiz occupied the same positions again, with reigning champions Wizard taking the spoils ahead of in-form challengers The Salopettes. T.B.M. were third with The Corner Boys in fourth.

Enchantress maintain their overall lead despite a slip-up but can safely jettison that result when discards come into play.

We welcome back all teams on 7 February next for the next installment, which will commence at (let’s hear it) 8pm sharp!

Quiz update:

The Christmas Quiz dinner was held on Wednesday 13th December with a full dining room and great atmosphere. They say Christmas comes just once a year, but Wizard must wish it could be Christmas every day. Having consumed too much eggnog early on, the current champions dropped seven points in one round, yet were able to reach the top of the tree by the end of the evening – helped clearly by some teams merriment and answering under the influence (Corner Boys!).

Enchantress continued their good form to tie in 2nd place with The Dirty Ruckers, and The Salopettes, followed by T.B.M. and The Corner Boys. The overall leader board shows Enchantress leading the way but keen form students will be eyeing the potential for discards in the future.

We take a break now until the next quiz in 2024 – January 24th at 8pm sharp! The Quizmaster would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teams for their participation and enthusiasm in making it a great quiz season so far, and we wish all teams and their families a very Happy Christmas  and a safe New Year. They say it takes ‘two to Tango’, and so Enchantress took to the floor on Wednesday to sashay into a tie-break. After a nail-biter, Tango waltzed away with the win. The Corner Boys continued to pogo up and down in form, while The Dirty Ruckers capped a fine performance in fourth, with last-time-out winners Celtic Boys left looking for a dance partner after swanning into an early lead.

Enchantress, though, move to the top of the Overall Leaderboard, while all the other teams eagerly await the chance to discard their poorer performances.

One view is that, with up to four potential discards, all teams are currently sitting tied on zero points!

 

Next up is the Christmas Dinner Quiz on the 13th December â€“ all teams who are intending on dining should notify the club in advance. Dinner for 7.30pm. Quiz will start at 8.30pm.
