A packed summer for NYC Sailor Patrick Hassett

In case you noticed the absence of Paddy Hassett sailing his 2.4mR from the NYC, he reports below on his competitions this summer.

“My first event of the summer was the European 2.4mR Championships in Quiberon in France in May.  There were four days of great sailing and one day spent sitting in a café in the marina waiting for the wind to pick up. Many of the top world sailors were at this event, and so it was a great learning opportunity. I came 29th out of 38 competitors in this championship.

I then competed in the Irish National Championship in Carrickfergus and came 3rd.

My next event was the French National 2.4mR championship in Paris in early September. Racing was held on the River Seine. This was a very unusual experience, as there were many additional aspects to river sailing that I was not used to. The most important being the right of way given to barges and passenger vessels passing through the racecourse, making them an extra obstacle to be avoided.
The wind was also very shifty and prone to dying suddenly. This all made the event a new and refreshing experience.

I then went to Rotterdam the following weekend for the Dutch National 2.4mR Championships. This was held on a lake meaning it was a much more familiar setting for me.

All in all, it was great to get a large amount of racing experience and the series of events was good fun. I am heading to the UK for another lake event in Rutland this weekend and after that you will see me back in Dun Laoghaire as often as I can, between my studies!
